From Bottom-up to Long Tail: The digital social-sector brings up a lot of new words – we explain them to you.
B
Bottom-Up Approach
Describes the approach to solve problems beginning at the foundations of society. Instead of forcing huge centrally planned programs (top-down) a bottom-up approach tries to aim directly at those in need. In the social sector the bottom up approach is especially applied by grass-roots movements working with the least bureaucratic effort and very few personnel. Another example is the 16.000 employee Grameen Bank which gives microcredits to the poorest in society. In principle bottom-up approaches go from the concrete to the abstract, while top-down approaches take the opposite way. When a project pretends to be bottom-up or grass-root it is called astroturfing.
